Glow Boulder in English; Dark mornings, days and evenings are a part of Finnish everyday life during the fall and winter. To help with managing the gloom and darkness we will light your evening with UV-lights. We’ve organized Hohtoboulder from around year 2018 and it’s become somewhat known event amongst climbers in Oulu. A part of the event is our traditional tape route competition that you can participate during the evening. The competition is just a part of the event and you’re not required to take part in it. You can, however, try the tape routes others have made during the evening even if you’re not competing! So you can come enjoy the evening with friends, try your skills in the competition or just hang around and cheer for others.
To make sure you get everything out of the event, make use of the uv-facepaints, craft accessories from the glowsticks and put on clothes that glow in the uv-lights. We will have a local DJ who’ll make sure you’ve got the grooves for the evening.
During the event the normal climbing in 24/7 boulder can be restricted at times during 17-18.30 when the competitors make tape routes. The roof lights will be off during the event and the lighting will be through uv-lights.

What is tape competition? The idea with tape competition is that each competitor makes a route with the existing holds and shapes on the wall. The route is made by marking the holds and shapes climbers can use with tape. You can decide what kind of route you want to make and how difficult it will be. Will you try to make a route that requires technical mastery or do you aim to make it the most pleasant climb of the event? All levels and styles of routes are welcome! For the route to be accepted into competition, you need to be able to climb it yourself! When the route is ready and you’ve climbed it, pick up a route number from the staff and add it to the start. Each competitor can make one route to the competition. When the taping is done, we’ll go through every route to make sure everyone knows where it begins and ends. After this we’ll start the competition and your aim will be to climb as many of the routes others have made as you can.
The points will be calculated using the so called “birch town” method. This means that each route is worth 100 p. The amount of points get’s divided among the people who manage to climb the route. So if for example route “3” is climbed by 5 people, they each get 20 p. The winner is the person with most points at the end of the competition. Mark the routes you’ve climbed on your score card and return it to the staff when you’re done. The score will be published the next day at this web page and on social media. We’ll hold a raffle for a month of climbing + some smaller awards among the participants so make sure to turn in your score card!
After the competition is over, we’ll gather all the tapes and extra holds from the wall. You can still continue climbing as usual after the event ends.
